Wake up activity:

The new volunteers were made to dance four simple steps to a song along with the old volunteers and the coordinators. This was to done to get the complete attention of the new volunteers and was a great start.

Why Volunteering?

Before proceeding with the presentation the volunteers were questioned for their volunteering motives. We wanted to know why they chose BHUMI and why they want to go for educational volunteering. A video depicting the educational statistics of India was then played to update the new volunteers.

Bhumi Presentation:

The presentation informing them about the goals and objectives of Bhumi, followed by a video which briefed about the different projects and how the academic sessions are conducted was played.

Ice breaker:

The volunteers were then divided into groups, and asked to design costumes for one guy and one girl in the group within a given time limit using newspapers. They had to display these costumes on the ramp with an innovative pose at the end. The motive behind this activity was to bring out their creativity and teamwork. We added another surprise twist to this activity by asking them to introduce their team members in the end.

Volunteer Impact:

This was followed by a video which introduced the volunteers to Bhumi Pune. This was then followed by a presentation which focused on the volunteer impact and consequences of volunteer drop outs. In the end, volunteers were asked to decide upon the project of their interest, join the group discussion for each project followed by a personal interview.

I don’t want to live in the kind of world where we don’t look out for each other. Not just the people that are close to us,but anybody who needs a helping hand.Everybody needs the best start in life and education is essential for a child’s development. There is no duty more important than ensuring that their rights are preserved, that their welfare is considered that the have no fear, that they live in peace and that each of them reach their goals in life.Working with BHUMI, which is one of Indias largest youth volunteering organisation,I dedicate a few hours every week towards the development of under-privileged children and that is a great source of mental peace. In addition to that satisfaction I am also adding multiple skills to my profile that are especially good at complementing technical or quantitative backgrounds. The physical, emotional and intellectual impairments that poverty inflicts on them can mean a lifetime of suffering. Investing fully in them today will ensure the well being and benefit the future generations.

Association with Bhumi, one of India’s largest youth volunteering organization, has been a wonderful experience. I am associated with the Little Einstein Science Project of Bhumi, responsible for practically demonstrating the theoretical concepts of science. Being a science enthusiast myself, I love doing practical demonstrations of various experiments. While volunteering, I brushed up on my knowledge of science thanks to the questions by the inquisitive kids. I learnt patience and now I can handle the kids better. This has also made me handle people outside. I now know how to convey things in a very comprehensive manner and describe them lucidly. At the end of each session, we question the kids on their level of concept understanding and it feels good that I have widened their horizon of science. I enjoyed the trip we had with the kids at the science park wherein it was a mutual learning experience. Bhumi provides a great platform to budding volunteers like me.

Bhumi is a great platform towards doing good humane work. by creating awareness and making differences in the life of those who are in need.It gives me immense pleasure to be a part of Bhumi I always think I should’ve joined Bhumi early. As I feel after joining Bhumi,my life’s perception has changed.Earlier I used to think teaching is such a tough job but now after meeting those kids and going through teaching experience, I feel it is wonderful. It is so blissful to teach those who are really in need.On my first day I got goosebumps when those kids started welcoming us with the nice song and did aarti. It was a great experience.Every time I go there I feel so happy and it makes go there everytime.I put in my best for them because it gives me inner satisfaction and strength.Lastly I wanted to express my feeling through a quotation given by Mahatma Gandhi,”The Best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

NRO Dance

“DANCE IS THE HIDDEN LANGUAGE OF THE SOUL OF THE BODY”

Kolors 1408 Dance3

Dance has been associated with NRO for the past three years. What started with just one center in the beginning has now expanded and spread out its wings to eight centers. During the initial stages, there was no structured syllabus that was followed. The kids were taught dance steps and routines based on their liking.

But throughout this time we were able to connect to the kids and understand as to what they wanted from us. This helped us in framing a structured syllabus keeping in mind the child’s liking and interests.

Right from the start of 2014, the plans had been well thought of. Although it was a bit difficult in the beginning to get the attention of the kids, once we started explaining to them as to what styles we were going to teach them, they were very much interested and keen to learn it. A few ice breaker games and activities helped us creating a good bond with the kids.

The kids could relate to a lot of dance moves that we showed them to some other movies they had seen and their persistence to teach us those steps showcased the amount of enthusiasm they had towards dance.

To ensure discipline, BMC chart had been implemented wherein the kids chose their own rules and punishments for themselves as well as the volunteers. Peer learning was also implemented on a large scale to bring out the leadership qualities in children.

As far as the syllabus is concerned, bollywood, hip-hop and ballet are the three styles that are to be taught over a period of three months in the above said order. Workshops will be conducted by Species Dance Academy to get the volunteers more accustomed to the different styles of dance.
